Through the Paint NC initiative, Buncombe County is getting a brand new mural from artist Max Dowdle — here’s how you can help choose the design and help paint it too.

The three choices are only slightly different.

Through the Paint NC initiative, artist Max Dowdle is painting 100 murals across 100 counties — and you can have a say in Buncombe County’s mural, covering more than 3,000 sqft of indoor and outdoor space at Pack Memorial Library.

Funding for the $37,600 mural comes from the Local Assistance & Tribal Consistency Fund under the American Rescue Plan Act, designated for public art projects.

County staff have already voted on the top three designs, depicting the flora and fauna of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the French Broad River. And now it’s your turn to share your artistic eye. Cast your vote online or in person at Pack Memorial Library.

After the masterpiece is picked out, you can make it come to life by joining Dowdle for community paint days in May. More details to come on that.
