Mahjong is taking Asheville by storm, one tile at a time. Last week, the city welcomed its first mahjong lounge, The Velvet Wind, at 9 W. Walnut St., next to Mountain Madre.

A group of five local women — Natalie Dierkes, Lynn Roberts, Kimberly Moore, Michelle Drake, and Myra Hensley — own and operate the lounge, with plush seats and a lush botanical vibe. Beer, wine, prosecco, tea, and light snacks are available to keep the games going.

The centuries-old Chinese tile game has experienced a massive resurgence thanks to its mix of strategy and social connection. “We wanted to create a space where people could slow down, engage, and enjoy something tactile and meaningful,” said co-owner Natalie Dierkes.

In addition to open play, The Velvet Wind is hosting a series of May classes for folks of all levels, from brand new players to mahjong masters. DM on Instagram to reserve your spot.
