The holidays can be a difficult time for many. Especially given the struggles WNC has faced due to Helene, we’re here to remind you that you’re not alone + to offer resources and tips for a mental health check-in.
Services + resources
- Join one of NAMI Western North Carolina’s virtual, confidential support groups to be heard + helped.
- There are local support groups designed to offer help processing the effects of Helene.
- Check out this list of wellness resources from the NC Department of Health and Human Services to discover more NC helplines.
Animal therapy
- Make a reservation at Cats at Play Cafe or House of Black Cat Magic to cuddle with some furry felines.
- Volunteer to walk, clean, and play with animals that are looking for their fur-ever homes at one of Asheville’s local animal shelters + rehabilitation centers.
Get creative
- Story Parlor and Flatiron Writers Room offer writing and creativity-focused workshops that encourage participants to share openly to unlock their craft.
- Channel your inner artist by taking a marbling painting class at Majik Studios or learn a new medium with ArtPlay at its new location in Chestnut Hill.
Meet new friends
- Check out the Asheville Sport and Social Club + join an adult league like dodgeball, softball, or cornhole.
- Expand your circle with Meetup to connect with like-minded Ashevillians.
Take care of your body
- Center your mind and move your body during a class at one of Asheville’s yoga studios.
- Breathe — this might seem self-explanatory, but breathing techniques can make a big difference in controlling your stress levels.
- Step away from the screens. Block off 30-minute increments of screen-free time, put your phone down + close your laptop to give your eyes and mind some time to relax.
