Calling all movers and shakers. Are you ready to become an even more engaged citizen? Do you wish you knew more about the goings-on in our city, before they happen? You can make your voice heard — by serving as a member on one of the City’s boards and commissions.

As a board member, you can weigh in on topics like appearance or planning, advise on transit system matters, or contribute to debt financing for small business enterprises.

Which committees + boards have openings?

🗂 | Audit Committee | Two openings; one is for a CPA

Reports to City Council about committee activities, issues, and related recommendations as needed, one time a year + provides communication avenue between internal audit, the external auditors, and City Council.

🗂 | Board of Adjustment | Vacancy for an alternate seat

Hears + decides applications for approval of variances from the terms of the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), hears + decides appeals from any order, requirement, permit, decision, or determination issued/made by an admin. of the City in enforcing UDO provisions, serves as the City’s Housing Code Appeals Board, and more.

🗂 | Mountain Community Capital Fund Operating Committee | Two openings

Provides debt financing to small business enterprises in the City of Asheville + Buncombe County and is sponsored by The City of Asheville, Buncombe County, Self-Help Ventures Fund, Carolina Small Business, and Mountain BizWorks.

🗂 | Public Art + Cultural Commission | One opening

Promotes + maintains art displays in public buildings/spaces in the City of Asheville, facilitates public art in public buildings/paces, engages the creative sector as a major attraction for artists, cultural tourism, and economic development, and aids in strengthening the organizational structure of public and cultural arts delivery, and more.

🗂 | Transit Committee | This vacancy is open until filled.

Functions as an advisory board to the Multimodal Transportation Commission (MTC) and the City staff on matters that affect the transit system + its operation. All Transit Committee members are appointed by the MTC.

The deadline for these vacancies is April 5 at 5 p.m. (unless otherwise stated). City Council is scheduled to make appointments at the April 13 Council Meeting.
