The Center for Craft is helping lead the legacy of American craft after receiving a two-year $425,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation for its future Community Library and Archives, slated to open in 2028.
The project builds on the Center’s recent acquisition of the American Craft Council Library and Archives. And to add this major, nationally significant collection of 20,000+ books, photographs, catalogs, and oral histories to the Center’s existing collections, a renovation is in order.
To put it in perspective, the completed collection will form the most comprehensive archive of American craft in the US, second in scope only to the Smithsonian’s.
The Center for Craft’s Community Library and Archives won’t simply be a place to store these documents — the initiative aims to make craft history more accessible, inviting new audiences to explore how it shapes culture and to inspire the next generation of artists.
