Roll out the red carpet, food lovers (and watch the crumbs). On Wednesday, Jan. 21, the semifinalists were announced for the 2026 James Beard Awards — one of the culinary world’s most prestigious prizes — and three Asheville area stars are shining bright. Here’s the local flavor.

Meherwan Irani and Molly Irani, Chai Pani Restaurant Group | Nominated for: Outstanding Restaurateur
The Iranis are no strangers to these awards, but it is their first time being nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur, which recognizes community leadership and entrepreneurial creativity.

Matt Dawes, The Bull and Beggar | Nominated for: Best Chef, Southeast
Dawes is the executive chef at the European-inspired casual fine dining spot and helped revive the RAD restaurant after Helene. This nomination isn’t just about food — it’s also about making a positive mark on the community at large.

Taylor Montgomery, Montgomery Sky Farm | Nominated for: Best Chef, Southeast
Montgomery wears a lot of hats. He’s the founder, executive chef, and head farmer at Montgomery Sky Farm in Leicester, specializing in monthly “seed to plate” dining experiences.

Mark your calendars for March 31, when the finalists will be announced. A June 15 ceremony in Chicago will reveal the winners.
