Meet Reddit, a website for conversations a little more focused than comments on a Facebook post, but more casual + personalized than a forum.

A brief primer on how Reddit works: users subscribe to specific subreddits, which are individual communities for conversations about a certain topic, like r/worldnews, r/science, or r/aww. Many are also for advice like r/personalfinance or r/askreddit. You create a discussion in a subreddit and users can comment + upvote or downvote the post, which is a good indication of how many people are interested or agree/disagree.

Today we’re looking at r/asheville, a subreddit dedicated specifically to Asheville, N.C. There are 12,100 people subscribed, asking questions, discussing news, and sharing photos daily. Here are five interesting conversations we wanna hop in on.

🍔 What are the best daily food + drink specials in Asheville?

You might know about a few Monday night burger + beer specials, but did you know there are 50 cent wing deals, burrito nights, cheap growler refill nights, rotisserie chicken specials + more during the rest of the week? Bonus: Our drink specials guide lists dozens of drink deals, many found from this thread.

🐩 Who are the best affordable dog groomers?

Dogs are a hot topic all over Reddit. There’s lots of good advice on this thread (and this one) about where the best spots to take your pup are, as well as what you can expect price-wise. Bonus thread: Another user wants to know, “What’s the deal with dogs?” 😂

🚗 My parents are visiting Asheville for the first time. What should I do with them?

Some ideas include hiking + lunch at Mount Mitchell, historical Montford trolley tours + more activities that are perfect when you want to do more than just brewery hop. This helped inspire our 48-hours in Asheville guide.

🏡 What else is there to do at the Biltmore besides tour the house?

The short answer: a lot! Users weigh in with all their secrets to an afternoon at the Biltmore. A picnic at the trout pond followed by a stroll through the greenhouse is our idea of a perfect Saturday.

DYK: Outdoor rec company Orvis has a fly-fishing lodge at the Biltmore? One user says, “Last year I bought my husband a fly-fishing class that lasted two days where [they learned how to make] their own fly-fishing flies and spent a whole day fishing out on the property.”

🚘What are the best spots for a solo weekend trip?

If you’re looking to get out of Asheville for some r+r in the coming months, this thread has some off-the-beaten path ideas for beautiful places to spend a weekend that aren’t more than 6 hours away.

🍯 Should I be worried about the bears here?

The community weighs in on their craziest bear stories, and why you really shouldn’t be worried about getting mauled.

The subreddit also features a weekly thread for folks who are visiting or moving to Asheville to ask questions and get to know the locals.

But wait, there’s more! If you like what you see on r/asheville, hop over to its sister subreddits that are even more specific:

Really though, one of the best things about r/asheville is all the incredible photos of the city that people post. Downtown Asheville in 1962? The French Broad River at 4 a.m. right after a snowfall? What’s not to love?
