Community: Folkmoot Lunar New Year Celebration | 6 – 8 p.m. | Folkmoot Friendship Center | 112 Virginia Ave., Waynesville | $15 adult, $10 student, $40 family | Celebrate the Year of the Dog with Folkmoot + Western Carolina University. The evening includes an Asian-inspired dinner, live music from an Indonesian gamelan group, + cultural sharing.

Show: Snake Oil Medicine Show’s Chinese New Year 2017 | 8 p.m. | Pisgah Brewing Company | 150 Eastside, Black Mountain | Celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Dog with this themed show, which will hearken back to Jamaican Chinese New Year celebrations + roots-rock-reggae tunes.

Talk: Science Pub: Crude Awakening | 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. | The Collider | 1 Haywood St. | Roger Helm, former lead scientist for the Department of Interior’s damage assessment team, presents a detailed look into the government’s handling of oil spills. Lite bites and refreshments will be provided.

ForKids: Annual “Critter” Checkup | 11- 3 p.m. | WNC Nature Center | Regular admission rates apply | The Nature Center’s veterinarian and animal care staff will be on hand to give your loved plush animal an annual checkup.

Show: Bebel Gilberto | The Orange Peel | 8 p.m. | $35 / $30 | The multi-Grammy-nominated vocalist will share ethereal vocals, dreamy lyricism, + warm, playful Brazilian rhythms.

Class: Try the Pottery Wheel | 12 – 5 p.m. | Fired Up Creative Lounge | 26 Wall St. | $25 | Give pottery a try with one of these mini wheel lessons. One time slot per person + instruction and creation of a small bowl.
