October marks National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and many shelters across the country are offering special initiatives to help the dogs in their care find loving homes.

Here are some local ones:

ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center
Weaverville’s 28,000-sqft Behavioral Research Center is the ASPCA’s first-ever permanent facility dedicated to rehabilitating dogs that have been victims in animal cruelty cases. Want to give one of these dogs a second chance at a happy ending? Check out the adoptable dogs.

Asheville Humane Society
The American Humane Society has celebrated Adopt a Shelter Dog month since 1981. This year, Subaru is sponsoring the campaign + will donate $100 to the Asheville Humane Society for every pet that is adopted (for a maximum of $3,100).

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue
Like many shelters, BWAR has more animals in its care right now than they have had in several years. For the entire month of October, all dogs over four-months-old will have an adoption fee of $2. See BWAR’s adoptable dogs.

Want to help out but can’t adopt? Consider volunteering your time, donating money, or signing up to foster animals for any of the aforementioned shelters.
